Where silence meets the wind: hiking to Monte Cucco

A Morning That Starts Slowly

There is a moment, early in the morning at an agriturismo, when the world seems not yet awake. The light filters through the olive trees at a low angle, the air carries the scent of damp grass, and the day has not yet made up its mind.

This is when Valfabbrica, deep in the province of Perugia, reveals its true character: a place shaped for those who need to breathe again.

Agriturismo Le Dolci Colline is precisely that kind of place. Five accommodations surrounded by the Umbrian countryside, a pool where time slows down, open spaces that invite stillness. The right place from which to leave — or simply to stay.

But for those drawn by the call of the mountains, there is a destination waiting beyond the hills.

Monte Cucco: the Park Where Umbria Climbs

To the northeast of Perugia, in the Umbrian Apennines, the Parco del Monte Cucco traces a landscape that shifts with the seasons and with altitude. Dense beech forests, open meadows, sweeping views across Umbria that blur into the horizon.

A territory that walkers cross with both care and wonder.
There are trekking routes of varying difficulty in the area, designed for those who want to explore the Park on foot, at their own pace. There is no single Monte Cucco: there are many, one for each trail chosen, each direction taken through the trees.

There is the Monte Cucco of the solitary walker seeking quiet, and the one discovered by families and small groups, moving slowly between meadows and open viewpoints.

For mountain bike enthusiasts, MTB routes through the area — forest trails and open terrain alternating between beech woodland and broader landscapes.

In the woodland, among the olive trees

The experience takes place on our land, between the woodland and the olive groves. You will walk on beaten earth, beneath silvery canopies filtering the light. You will feel the soft ground underfoot, the rough bark of centuries-old trunks beneath your fingertips.

There is no background music here. The sound is the real thing: leaves stirred by the breeze, a woodpecker in the distance, the whisper of an arrow leaving the string. It is a silence that does not unsettle you — quite the opposite, it makes you draw a longer breath than usual.

The archery range is set within this landscape. No concrete, no artificial structures. Just targets among the trees and the space to focus without distractions.

Stefano, your archer

Your guide is Stefano. He will not give you a theory lecture: he will put a bow in your hands and teach you how to use it, step by step.

It starts with a practical briefing: how to hold the bow, how to position your feet, how to aim. Concrete things, explained calmly. Then you shoot. The first arrows will go wherever they please — that is normal, it is part of the game. But by the third or fourth, you will feel something shift: your body finds its position, your hand knows what to do, and when the arrow hits the target, the satisfaction is the real kind.

Stefano follows each person with care, corrects gently, and has exactly the right patience for anyone who has never touched a bow in their life.

The sky as horizon: paragliding and hang gliding

There is something genuinely valuable in the passage between experiences: from the stillness of the agriturismo to the openness of the mountain, from the pool to the beech forest, from the quiet of the hills to the weightlessness of flight. It is not about choosing a single rhythm, but about letting different rhythms move through you.

Returning to Le Dolci Colline after a day in the Park means rediscovering something that has quietly expanded. The space around you feels wider, the colours of the Umbrian countryside sharper, the evening slower and more necessary.

The agriturismo also offers bicycles and mountain bikes among its services — for those who prefer to move through the surrounding landscape at an in-between pace, somewhere between a stroll and a full mountain excursion.

An Invitation, Not a Promise

Umbria cannot be told all at once. It reveals itself in pieces: a hillside profile at dusk, the sound of wind in the beeches, the shadow of a paraglider crossing pale mountain rock.

Agriturismo Le Dolci Colline is one of those places from which to gather these fragments — not in haste, not with a fixed itinerary, but with a willingness to be surprised.

Monte Cucco is there, beyond the hills. All it takes is to look up.
